A 10 W laser for what I currently do by hand or send out: metal shims cut to a tenth, engraving focus and aperture scales, marking caps and rings, and numbering the parts I make. It's the missing piece of the custom manufacturing service.
When two elements are bonded together and the cement between them degrades, an iridescent patch appears that isn't fungus and doesn't clean off. Separating them and bonding them again is work I know how to do, and I already have the chemistry and the temperature-controlled curing oven. What's missing isn't that: it's being able to measure that the two elements ended up aligned. Without that measurement, delivering it would mean trusting that it looks right, and I'm not charging for that.
A machine to measure the decentring of each element in a lens and give a figure, instead of «looks fine». It changes the trade: it means a measured centring report can go out with the repair, it means a lens can be surveyed before you buy it or put it on a shoot, and it is what unlocks re-cementing.
Resolution and contrast measured against a chart with a repeatable procedure, so before and after can be compared with a number rather than an impression. It sits behind the centring machine because it shares part of the rig.
Putting the optics of an old stills lens into a new barrel with follow-focus gears, long throw and standardised diameters. It is the service with the most commercial upside and also the one that demands the most tooling and the most measurement: until the centring machine exists, starting it makes no sense.
